Thousands gathered Wednesday evening at the Goi-Pantanali barracks in Gemona del Friuli for a special concert by Andrea Bocelli marking the 50th anniversary of the devastating 1976 Friuli earthquake, an event that reshaped northeastern Italy and remains deeply embedded in the region’s collective memory.
The concert formed part of a broader yearlong commemorative program dedicated to remembering the victims of the earthquake while reflecting on the reconstruction effort that followed — a recovery process often cited in Italy as a model of civic resilience and local governance.
Regional officials described the event as both a moment of remembrance and a large-scale public gathering intended to unite residents across generations. Organizers expected attendance to exceed 15,000 people, making it one of the largest events in the anniversary program.
Among those attending were regional councillors Riccardo Riccardi, Barbara Zilli, Cristina Amirante, Fabio Scoccimarro and Sergio Emidio Bini. The event came one day after official commemorations attended by Italian President Sergio Mattarella and Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
The Friuli earthquake of 1976 killed nearly 1,000 people and destroyed large parts of towns across the region, including Gemona del Friuli, Venzone and Osoppo. In the decades since, the reconstruction has often been studied in Italy for its emphasis on rebuilding communities within their original historic centers while involving local administrations directly in decision-making.
