The Municipality of Trieste has announced that all paper identity cards will become invalid starting Aug. 3, 2026, urging residents to replace them with the electronic version in the coming months.
To facilitate the transition, the city’s Department of General Services has scheduled a series of extended opening hours at civic centers in April and May, dedicated բացառively to the renewal of paper documents. These additional sessions will take place at the Civic Center on Via del Teatro Romano from 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. on selected dates, including April 14, 16, 17, 21 and 28, and May 5, 8, 14, 15, 19, 22, 26 and 29.
The extended hours are intended to supplement regular service times, which remain in effect across the city’s network of civic centers.
Access to the Civic Centers on Via del Teatro Romano and in Opicina (Altipiano Est) will be granted on a walk-in basis, without prior appointment, both during standard hours and the additional openings. Through July 31, 2026, residents may also access centers in Valmaura and Prosecco (Altipiano Ovest) without an appointment, subject to previously scheduled bookings.
Residents are required to bring a recent passport-sized photograph taken within the past six months, without glasses, along with their existing identity card. In cases of loss or theft, a police report must be provided. The standard fee for issuing the electronic identity card is €22, rising to €27 for replacements due to loss. Payments can be made at the counter, with debit cards preferred, though cash is also accepted.
Special provisions apply to minors applying for an identity card valid for travel abroad. For first-time issuance, both parents or a legal guardian must be present with valid identification. For renewals, one parent may apply, provided they present written consent from the other parent along with a copy of that parent’s identification.
City officials are encouraging residents not to wait until the deadline approaches, noting that demand is expected to increase significantly in the months leading up to the cutoff date.
