With winter nearing, the Trieste Local Police have launched an intensive round of roadside inspections targeting mopeds and motorcycles, aiming to improve safety and reduce environmental impact on the city’s streets.

According to Caterina de Gavardo, the city’s Councillor for Security, the Motorized Unit — a division specializing in road policing and emergency response — carried out a series of extraordinary checks in early November. “As the winter season approaches, the unit conducted a campaign of comprehensive inspections on mopeds and motorcycles, with the goal of contributing to safer roads for everyone, especially motorcyclists, who remain among the most vulnerable in accidents,” she said.

Officers examined a range of safety-related components, including tires to ensure adequate grip and proper maintenance, as well as mirrors and lighting systems, which are essential for visibility during circulation. Particular attention was given to exhaust systems, which must be certified, efficient, and compliant with standards aimed at reducing noise and air pollution — a priority that the city frames as both a safety and environmental concern.

In recent days, 146 mopeds and motorcycles underwent inspection. Authorities reported 23 violations relating to vehicle construction and mandatory equipment. In four cases, circulation documents were withdrawn after inspectors uncovered serious irregularities and structural modifications deemed dangerous. Those vehicles must now undergo an extraordinary inspection at the Civil Motorization Office.

The Local Police said the checks will continue in the coming months, with the aim of strengthening prevention efforts and reducing the significant number of road accidents involving two-wheeled vehicles — incidents that frequently result in severe consequences for riders.
