The city of Trieste will once again take part in the European Mobility Week, a European Commission initiative promoting sustainable urban transport, running September 16–22.
Presenting the program on Thursday, Michele Babuder, Trieste’s Councillor for Territorial Policies, emphasized the city’s commitment to building a safer, more inclusive, and environmentally conscious transport system. This year’s theme, “Mobility for All,” frames mobility as a right rather than a privilege, with a focus on accessibility and collaboration between institutions, associations, and citizens.
The weeklong calendar includes nature walks, road safety workshops, cycling and roller sports events, cultural activities, and scientific outreach programs. Highlights feature the unveiling of a new electric bus and transport app in Piazza Unità d’Italia, a public health initiative linking sport and the environment, and the city’s historic uphill race, the Rampigada Santa. A solidarity swimming event, exhibitions, school programs, and cross-border cycling routes will also be part of the program.
Trieste will additionally offer residents the chance to activate a free annual subscription to BiTS, the city’s bike-sharing service, during select events.
“Every step, every bike ride, and every choice to share transport is an investment in health, the environment, and the community,” Mr. Babuder said. “This edition shows how sport, culture, health, and transport can merge into a single vision for a more livable, greener city.”
Since 2002, European Mobility Week has encouraged cities across Europe to promote sustainable transport and inspire behavioral change toward public transit, cycling, and walking.
