The City of Trieste, in partnership with the multi-utility company AcegasApsAmga, has launched the fourth edition of its summer sustainability initiative, “Un Mare di Differenziata” (“A Sea of Recycling”), aimed at improving waste separation at seaside facilities and combating marine litter.

The project was formally presented on Thursday morning at the Ausonia beach resort, one of the first participants in the initiative since its inception. The event brought together municipal officials, environmental service providers, and beach concession operators to reaffirm their joint commitment to sustainable tourism during the busy summer season.

Speaking at the press conference, Michele Babuder, City Councillor for Urban Planning, emphasized the importance of extending responsible waste management practices beyond the home. “Recycling doesn’t go on holiday—it goes to the beach,” he said, summarizing the campaign’s core message.

Also in attendance were Massimo Buiatti, Director of Environmental Services for AcegasApsAmga; Alberto Poniz, project manager at Riciclo System S.r.l.; and representatives from local beach clubs and water sports associations, all of whom are active partners in the effort.

The initiative provides sorting bins, signage, and educational outreach across participating beach facilities, encouraging both residents and tourists to correctly separate waste materials such as plastic, glass, and organic waste while enjoying the Adriatic coast.

Organizers credit the program with raising awareness and reducing litter at popular swimming areas. As the project enters its fourth year, it reflects a broader push by Italian coastal cities to align recreational activities with environmental responsibility.
