Theater, music, and cinema will lead the way in the early July program of Trieste Estate, the city’s summer cultural festival. Among the many events, a standout moment will be a concert set to take place at one of Trieste’s most symbolically resonant sites, the Risiera di San Sabba, a former Nazi concentration camp and now a national monument.
On Tuesday, July 1, at 9:15 p.m., the gardens of the Sartorio Museum will host “Per un pugno di Riso” (For a Handful of Rice), a stand-up comedy night presented by Andrea Mitri, with special guest Rosario Mancuso. The event is part of Approdi, a national competition now in its third year, dedicated to emerging comedians under the age of 35. Six finalists will compete with 12-minute performances, aiming to win over both a jury of industry professionals and the audience.
Also on July 1, opera returns to San Giusto Castle at 9:15 p.m. with a performance of Puccini’s “Tosca,” directed by Stefania Panighini. This marks the second staging of the work within the festival, continuing the city’s tradition of open-air opera against the dramatic backdrop of one of its most iconic landmarks.
Full details of the program from July 1–3 will include additional theater productions, musical performances, and film screenings across various venues in Trieste. The inclusion of the Risiera di San Sabba as a concert venue signals a poignant intersection of memory and music, drawing attention to the power of the arts in civic remembrance and cultural continuity.
The events are part of Trieste Estate, an annual city-sponsored initiative that brings together local institutions, artists, and international guests in a series of performances held throughout the summer months. Many events are free to attend, though some require tickets.
More information on the schedule and ticketing is available through the city’s cultural office and official festival website.
