The Trieste Film Festival is set to open on January 16, 2025, with the double screening of Wishing on a Star, the latest film by acclaimed Slovak director Peter Kerekes. A co-production between Italy, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Austria, and Croatia, the film highlights Trieste’s role as a hub of cultural collaboration. Premiering in Venice’s “Orizzonti” section in 2024, the story follows Luciana, a Neapolitan astrologer whose birthday travel rituals offer her clients a chance at celestial rebirth.

The festival also features cultural experiences beyond cinema. Elsa Mencagli Andersen’s participatory art exhibition on January 18 and 19 explores non-verbal connection through touch and sound. Gianluca Guerra’s walking tour, The World in a City, showcases Trieste’s Cold War espionage history, while Marzia Arzon’s Serbia in Trieste tour delves into the Serbian community’s historical and modern-day ties to the city.

Music lovers can attend Ivo Dimchev’s concert at Hangar Teatri on January 17, blending theatrical performance with provocative storytelling. Serbian wine tastings at Antico Caffè San Marco will offer sparkling and white wines on the same evening. Children can enjoy workshops building “chambers of wonders” on January 18 and 19.

Tickets and reservations are available for all events, celebrating Trieste’s rich cinematic and cultural legacy.
