An Ode To San Vito

We didn’t know how much we loved our neighborhood (or rione in Italian) until we had to decide where to settle, and instantly both my husband and I knew “San Vito!”.

Standing tall upon a steep hill overlooking the gulf of Trieste,  San Vito is more than the oldest residential neighborhood. Named after a small church at the end of the narrow Via San Michele, it has a feel of a small town to it. From old English style villas seen from Via Besenghi to Via Bazzoni, to tall residential buildings with breathtaking views, it’s just a few minutes away from downtown yet it is a perfectly self-sufficient neighborhood.

Start your way to San Vito by braving Salita al Promontorio (probably, one of the steepest uphills of Trieste), admiring the view of Sacchetta behind you. Go ahead, and get unto one of the busiest streets of the neighborhood, via Combi, where you can find among others two take-away pizza shops, four coffee shops, a pastry shop and a supermarket. One of our favorite pastry shops in this part of town is Jerian with its freshly baked croissants that are to die for. And don’t forget to stop by Bar Neri, where the friendliest and always dressed to the nines owner Roberta will be happy to explain the difference between a capo in b and a cappuccino to you.

Proceed to Piazzale Rosmini, a beautiful small park by Madonna del Mare church.

If you have a bit more time, take the stairs to Via Besenghi and go towards Parco Bazzoni (a private park open to public during daytime), and make your way to via Tigor to discover a hidden gem called House of Masks (La Casa Dei Mascheroni, Via Tigor 12) and admire its unusual beauty in liberty style. From there, it’s just a 5 minute walk back to Cavana. What we love most about San Vito? Every uphill repays with unique views of our gulf. Buona passeggiata!
