Forni di Sopra Sees Tourism Growth as Region Invests in Year-Round Mountain Destinations

The mountain resort of Forni di Sopra has recorded an increase in both winter and summer tourism, as the Friuli Venezia Giulia regional government seeks to build on the growth through investments in accommodation, ski facilities and activities designed to attract visitors throughout the year.

During the most recent winter season, more than 66,000 skiers used the resort’s ski facilities operated by PromoTurismoFVG, an increase of 14.2% from the previous season, according to figures presented by the regional government.

Tourism also increased during the warmer months. Between January and September, accommodation facilities in the municipality recorded approximately 61,000 overnight stays, up 20% from the same period in 2026.

The figures were discussed Thursday in Udine during a meeting between Sergio Emidio Bini, the regional councillor for productive activities and tourism, and Forni di Sopra Mayor Iginio Coradazzi. The meeting focused on the development of tourism in the mountain community.

Bini said the increase in visitors represented an economic opportunity for smaller mountain municipalities, but argued that further growth would require additional accommodation capacity and improvements in the quality of existing facilities.

The region has introduced incentives to encourage the development of new hotels rated four stars or higher. A recently concluded funding program supported 12 projects, several of them in mountain areas.

Other initiatives include grants for tourism businesses, European Regional Development Fund contributions for improving environmental sustainability, support for so-called alberghi diffusi — accommodation networks spread across several buildings in historic villages — and the Turesta voucher program, which encourages visitors to stay in regional accommodation facilities.

Together, these measures have brought more than 40 million euros in regional funding to the accommodation sector over the past 12 months, Bini said.

Ski-pass prices and family discounts

Affordability is also part of the region’s strategy to attract winter visitors. For the 2026-27 season, an adult daily ski pass in high season, from Dec. 19 to March 14, will cost €45 for Friuli Venezia Giulia residents and €55 for visitors from outside the region.

Junior passes cost €11 for residents and €18 for non-residents, while children born between 2020 and 2024 can ski free. Family discounts include reductions of 30% on CARTAneve family season passes and 25% on Sci@sempre family passes.

The ski season is scheduled to run from Dec. 5, 2026, through March 29, 2027, with lower daily rates available outside the peak period.

Another priority, Bini said, is reducing the concentration of visitors during the winter and summer peak seasons. Under the region’s new Code for Commerce and Tourism, the government intends to support slower forms of travel and outdoor activities through dedicated funding programs.

The recent increase in summer overnight stays in Forni di Sopra, the regional government said, suggests that efforts to expand tourism beyond the traditional ski season are beginning to produce results.
