Preparations for the 58th Barcolana have intensified as the city hosted a series of sailing, cultural and environmental events ahead of Sunday’s main race, with 1,490 boats now registered.
The week will also bring the Italian Navy’s training ship Amerigo Vespucci to Trieste as it concludes its 2026 world tour. The vessel will be moored at Molo Bersaglieri from Oct. 8 to 12, alongside the Villaggio IN Italia. The ship has traveled more than 15,000 nautical miles since leaving Genoa in May, with stops in the United States, Canada and several Italian cities.
With the city expecting large crowds, Trieste has introduced temporary restrictions on glass containers and stronger alcoholic beverages in parts of the center. From 10 p.m. Wednesday through midnight Sunday, the possession and consumption of drinks in glass containers will be prohibited between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. in the designated area. Alcoholic beverages above 12 percent will also be restricted regardless of container type.
The Barcolana fleet will take to the Gulf of Trieste on Sunday, Oct. 11. As of Tuesday, 1,490 boats were registered for the race.
