Interviews: Gilberto Pichetto Fratin, Italy’s Minister of the Environment and Energy Security; Massimiliano Fedriga, President of the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region
Italy is preparing to expand renewable energy while laying the groundwork for a return to nuclear power, as high energy costs continue to weigh on businesses and households.
Speaking in Trieste, Gilberto Pichetto Fratin, Italy’s Minister of the Environment and Energy Security, said implementing decrees for the country’s nuclear legislation are expected by the end of the year. Nuclear power generation, however, would not begin until around the middle of the next decade.
Massimiliano Fedriga, governor of Friuli Venezia Giulia, called for greater energy independence, stronger infrastructure and continued investment in renewable sources. He also backed renewed discussion of nuclear energy as part of a broader strategy to reduce Italy’s exposure to volatile energy prices.
The debate comes as companies warn that expensive electricity and fuel are increasingly affecting competitiveness, while governments across Europe seek to strengthen energy security.
