The interior ministers of Italy, Slovenia and Croatia met in the city of Pordenone on Tuesday, 22 September, to discuss border security, migration management and cross-border police cooperation along the Balkan migration route.
The trilateral meeting, held at Villa Cattaneo, brought together Italy’s Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, Slovenia’s Franci Matoz and Croatia’s Davor Božinović, alongside regional and national officials. Discussions focused on immigration and asylum policy, border controls, law enforcement cooperation and efforts to combat cross-border crime.
Friuli Venezia Giulia, which borders both Slovenia and Austria, has long been a key transit region for migrants traveling through the Balkans into the European Union.
Pierpaolo Roberti, the region’s security councilor, said the meeting reflected the importance of sustained cooperation among the three countries in addressing irregular migration. He said recent years had seen stronger enforcement measures, including increased border checks and arrests, but argued that irregular crossings remained a significant challenge.
Among the measures discussed was the expansion of trilateral border control operations on Croatia’s frontier, which forms part of the European Union’s external border. Regional officials said closer coordination and the sharing of operational data would remain central to future efforts to manage migration and strengthen security across the region.
