Trieste’s international character was on full display this weekend, as visitors from across Europe and North America filled its cafés, waterfront and historic streets.

Travelers arrived for different reasons but shared a common destination. An American tourist was exploring the city’s literary and maritime heritage, while a couple from Ljubljana crossed the nearby border for a weekend getaway. A visitor from Montenegro was discovering Trieste for the first time, and an Austrian celebrated his grandmother’s 80th birthday with a family trip. Another couple from London came in search of the places where Irish writer James Joyce lived and worked during his years in the city.

Their stories reflected what has long made Trieste distinctive: a border city where cultures, languages and travelers naturally meet, turning an ordinary weekend into a snapshot of its enduring international identity.
