Danny Boyle’s Rupert Murdoch drama will open the festival, while Maggie Gyllenhaal presides over the international jury.
The 83rd Venice Film Festival will open on Sept. 2 with Ink, Danny Boyle’s biographical drama about media magnate Rupert Murdoch, as organizers unveiled a competition lineup centered on internationally acclaimed auteurs rather than major studio productions.
Among the 21 films competing for the Golden Lion are new works by Martin McDonagh, Werner Herzog, Lee Chang-dong, Hirokazu Kore-eda, Florian Zeller, May el-Toukhy and Casey Affleck. McDonagh’s Wild Horse Nine follows two CIA officers, played by John Malkovich and Sam Rockwell, on Easter Island in the days preceding Chile’s 1973 military coup.
The competition also includes Primetime, starring Robert Pattinson, as well as films from Luca Guadagnino, Nanni Moretti, Paul Schrader, Lav Diaz, Julia Loktev, Tsai Ming-liang and Lance Oppenheim.
Out of competition, the festival will present Kornél Mundruczó’s Place to Be, featuring Ellen Burstyn, Taika Waititi and Pamela Anderson. Other highlights include a documentary on the Oasis reunion tour and Alex Gibney’s long-awaited film about Elon Musk.
Maggie Gyllenhaal will serve as president of the international jury, joined by filmmakers and artists Kaouther Ben Hania, Johnnie To, Xavier Giannoli, Shahrbanoo Sadat, Daniel Blumberg and Francesco Casetti.
The festival will also honor George Clooney and Ellen Burstyn with lifetime achievement Golden Lions.
Beyond the main competition, Venice Days will celebrate its 23rd edition with 25 world premieres, more than half directed by women. The independent section is dedicated to the memory of its founder, Giorgio Gosetti, who died in March, and opens with Lili Horvát’s English-language debut, My Notes on Mars, starring Mackenzie Davis and Rupert Friend.
Meanwhile, Venice Critics’ Week will showcase seven debut features, opening with Marco Santi’s Il Grande Giaffa and closing with the Milan-set musical Rider.
