A magnitude 3.4 earthquake shook the Alto Friuli area shortly after midnight on Thursday, with the epicenter located between the towns of Gemona del Friuli, Venzone and Amaro, authorities said.
The tremor was recorded at 12:19 a.m. at a depth of 14 kilometers beneath Mount San Simeone, according to the National Institute of Oceanography and Applied Geophysics (OGS), which monitors seismic activity in northeastern Italy.
The earthquake occurred in the same region that was devastated by the 1976 Friuli earthquake, one of Italy’s deadliest seismic disasters, whose 50th anniversary is being commemorated this year.
No injuries or structural damage were reported. Emergency services received a small number of calls from residents who felt the shaking, while the Udine fire brigade confirmed that no rescue operations were required.
Although noticeable across parts of northern Friuli, the quake remained below the threshold typically associated with significant damage.
