The city of Trieste has begun a large-scale modernization of its public lighting system, replacing about 21,660 streetlights in a project officials say will significantly reduce energy consumption, lower carbon emissions and improve public safety.

The work, expected to take about 18 months, will start in the city’s outer neighborhoods before extending to the historic center, where additional approvals are still pending. The project also includes architectural lighting for 14 historic landmarks.

According to the municipality, the upgrade is expected to reduce electricity consumption for public lighting by roughly 70 percent, cutting annual carbon dioxide emissions from about 5,800 metric tons to approximately 1,400 metric tons. The initiative, financed by energy services company Edison Next with an investment of more than €8.8 million, will also introduce remote monitoring systems and predictive maintenance technologies across the network.

City officials said the modernization is part of a broader public-private partnership launched in 2024 to improve urban infrastructure and expand smart city services.
