A public dispute erupted between President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni of Italy this week after Mr. Trump claimed that Ms. Meloni had pleaded for a photograph with him during their meeting at the Group of 7 summit in Evian, France, a characterization the Italian leader swiftly rejected.

In a phone interview broadcast on June 19 by the Italian television program L’Aria che tira on La7, Mr. Trump described an encounter with Ms. Meloni at the summit and said she had strongly sought a photograph with him.

“Meloni wanted a photo with me, she begged me for a photo,” Mr. Trump told interviewer Daniele Compatangelo. “She wanted a photo with me so much. I wouldn’t have done it, but I felt pity for her.”

Ms. Meloni responded within hours through a video posted on Instagram, calling the account entirely false and expressing surprise at the remarks.

“The statements attributed to President Trump are completely fabricated,” she said. “I am frankly astonished that the President of the United States would behave this way toward an allied nation. I, and Italy, never beg anyone.”

The Italian prime minister also suggested that Mr. Trump appeared more willing to confront allies than geopolitical rivals, arguing that he did not display the same firmness toward adversaries of the West as he did toward partner nations.

The disagreement quickly drew reactions from senior members of the Italian government. Giovanbattista Fazzolari, the undersecretary to the presidency and one of Ms. Meloni’s closest advisers, issued a statement condemning Mr. Trump’s comments as “delirious” and describing them as part of a broader pattern of criticism directed at European leaders.

“It is increasingly difficult to understand whether the damage being inflicted on the historic relationship between Europe and the United States stems from intent or incompetence,” Mr. Fazzolari said.

The exchange marks a notable deterioration in a relationship that, until recently, had been viewed as one of the strongest between Mr. Trump and any European leader. Since returning to office, Mr. Trump had often spoken favorably of Ms. Meloni, whose conservative political positions have frequently aligned with his own on issues including migration and national sovereignty.

Relations, however, have become more strained in recent months. Italian media outlets have pointed to disagreements that emerged in April after Mr. Trump criticized Pope Leo XIV, remarks that generated unease within the Italian government and complicated what had been a close political relationship.

The fallout from the latest dispute extended beyond rhetoric. According to reports in the Italian financial daily Il Sole 24 Ore, Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani canceled a planned trip to Miami following Mr. Trump’s comments. Opposition parties, often sharply critical of Ms. Meloni’s government, also expressed support for the prime minister and criticized the remarks.

The episode comes at a sensitive moment for transatlantic relations, as European governments seek to maintain close cooperation with Washington on security, trade and geopolitical challenges. Italy, a founding member of NATO and one of the United States’ principal allies in Europe, has traditionally played a significant role in fostering ties between the two sides of the Atlantic.

Whether the dispute proves temporary or signals a deeper shift in relations between Rome and Washington remains unclear. But the unusually personal nature of the exchange has highlighted growing tensions between two leaders whose political partnership was once regarded as among the strongest in the Western alliance.
