The city of Trieste has introduced a new mayoral ordinance prohibiting the feeding of wild animals, including seagulls and pigeons, updating regulations that had been in place since 2008.

Municipal officials said the revised measure reflects changes in national legislation and recent public health concerns. The ordinance incorporates provisions from Italy’s 2015 law that prohibits the feeding of wild boars nationwide and takes into account recent cases of avian influenza detected along Trieste’s coastal area.

Under the new rules, residents are prohibited from feeding wild fauna, with violations subject to administrative fines. The measure specifically highlights species commonly found in urban areas, including seagulls, pigeons, crows and magpies.

City authorities said the ordinance is intended to help protect public health, maintain urban hygiene and limit interactions between people and wild animals.
