Athletes from Friuli Venezia Giulia who competed in the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics were honored this week at a ceremony in Trieste, where regional leaders highlighted both their achievements and the broader role of sport in public life.

The region’s governor, Massimiliano Fedriga, emphasized the level of sacrifice required to reach elite competition, noting that Olympic athletes embody discipline, resilience and long-term commitment.

He described sport as a strategic asset for the region — not only as a driver of health and well-being, but also as a tool for international promotion. That visibility, he said, comes through both the athletes themselves and initiatives like the “Io sono Friuli Venezia Giulia” branding set to appear on the leader’s pink jersey at the Giro d’Italia.

Together, he suggested, these efforts help project the region onto a global stage, linking athletic excellence with cultural and economic visibility.
