As sunset returns to the ramparts of Castello di San Giusto, so does one of Trieste’s most popular seasonal cultural programs: L’Ora di Storia (“The Hour of History”), a series of free guided evening tours that invites visitors to explore the city’s past from one of its highest vantage points.
Organized by the Municipality of Trieste through the museum of the castle, in collaboration with Midnight / Bar Bastione and CoopCulture, the initiative offers weekly guided walks along the fortress walls and bastions, led by the museum’s specialized guides.
Running from April 30 through May 31, the tours begin at 7 p.m. and last about an hour. Participation is free, though advance booking is required and places are limited.
The program, which proved highly successful in 2025, returns this year with both the original panoramic historical walk and a series of new thematic visits, each focused on a different period of Trieste’s long and layered history — from Roman Tergeste and the medieval city to the Habsburg era and the turbulent 20th century.
The experience combines history with one of the city’s most striking settings: the sunset views from the Bastione Rotondo, where participants can remain after the tour to enjoy the evening opening of Bar Bastione, often with a spritz in hand and the Adriatic stretching below.
The opening tour on April 30, Trieste from the Castle: A Historical and Panoramic Walk, offers a broad overview of the city’s evolution from Roman times to the present day, tracing centuries of political, social and urban transformation from above.
On May 7, Power and Faith: From the Roman City to the Middle Ages focuses on the hill of San Giusto itself, home to the remains of Roman Tergeste and the imposing 14th-century cathedral. The visit explores the city’s ancient and medieval identity, from early Christian martyrs to struggles for autonomy and tensions with Venice.
The May 17 tour, A Port for Many Peoples: Habsburg Trieste, turns to the 18th and 19th centuries, when the city flourished under Habsburg rule as a free port and commercial crossroads, shaped by trade, urban development and a coexistence of cultures.
On May 24, 20th-Century Trieste: Wars, Borders, Identities examines the city’s more complex modern history — the fall of empires, shifting national borders, totalitarian regimes and Trieste’s role as a frontier city and symbolic “laboratory of the twentieth century.”
The series concludes on May 31 with a repeat of the panoramic historical walk. All events take place outdoors and will be canceled in case of bad weather.
