Trieste has begun the first phase of renovations at Stadio Giuseppe Grezar, the city’s historic athletics stadium, with officials aiming to restore the venue’s certification for national and international competitions by October 2026.

Built in 1932 and once home to US Triestina Calcio 1918, the stadium is now shared between the football club for training and local athletics activities organized by the Italian Athletics Federation, or FIDAL.

The project focuses on resurfacing the eight-lane track and upgrading field event areas. The running track, last renovated in 2012, will receive a new blue surface, while surrounding areas will remain red. Runways for javelin and pole vault events will be extended to meet international standards, and new training areas and safety improvements will be added for shot put, discus, and hammer throw events.

The first phase, awarded to Tagliapietra Srl of Buttrio, is valued at more than €805,000 and is part of a broader €2 million investment funded by the Friuli Venezia Giulia region.

“This is a historic structure for Trieste,” said Elisa Lodi, the city’s councillor for sports policies. “By October, we will have a renovated and certified track once again available to the public.”

A second phase, including new lighting and upgraded spectator safety barriers, is expected to follow pending regulatory approval.
