Roberto Vannacci, a controversial member of the European Parliament elected with Italy’s right-wing Lega party, may be preparing to leave the party after registering the name and symbol of a potential new political movement, Futuro Nazionale.
The move has fueled speculation of an impending split between Mr. Vannacci and the Lega leadership, led by Matteo Salvini. Mr. Vannacci, a former army general who rose to prominence after publishing the polemical book Il mondo al contrario, joined the Lega ahead of the European elections and won a seat with a strong personal vote.
Mr. Salvini has publicly sought to downplay the risk of a break, warning that political initiatives outside the Lega tend to “fade quickly,” while emphasizing party unity. Behind the scenes, party officials acknowledge growing tensions over Mr. Vannacci’s increasingly autonomous political profile and hard-line positions.
No formal announcement of a departure has been made, and a meeting between Mr. Salvini and Mr. Vannacci is expected. Political analysts remain divided over whether the registration of Futuro Nazionale signals a genuine bid to form a new far-right party or a tactical move to gain leverage within the Lega.
