The Friuli Venezia Giulia region will see a significant increase in police personnel in the coming months, with a particular focus on border security, regional authorities announced on Tuesday.

According to Pierpaolo Roberti, the regional councillor for Security and Immigration, the plan includes the addition of five officers at the provincial police headquarters, four to the traffic police, five to the postal police, and another five to the Police School. Most notably, 59 officers and inspectors will be assigned to the border police in Trieste.

When combined with 44 new units in Gorizia and 21 in Udine, the total increase amounts to 124 additional personnel dedicated to border policing across the region.

“This is a substantial reinforcement that will allow us to maintain and strengthen border controls while ensuring a more comprehensive police presence throughout Friuli Venezia Giulia,” Roberti said. He emphasized the strategic importance of the region in national security efforts.

The regional councillor credited the staffing increases to ongoing collaboration between the regional government and Italy’s Ministry of the Interior. He also highlighted the continuation of the temporary suspension of the Schengen agreement as a measure that has positively impacted border management in 2025.

Roberti extended his thanks to Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi and Undersecretary Nicola Molteni, noting that police schools are currently operating at full capacity. He added that additional assignments scheduled for June are expected to further strengthen local security.
