As the Milan–Cortina Winter Olympics approach, interest is growing not only in the sporting events but also in the collectibles created to mark them. Among the most coveted items is a newly issued Italian gold coin, part of a special collectors’ series celebrating the 2026 Winter Games, scheduled to take place from February 6 to 22.

Italy’s state mint unveiled the coin earlier this year. Although it carries a nominal value of €20, its retail price is set at €869, reflecting both the cost of its materials and its limited availability. Only 1,200 pieces have been produced, each struck in 999.9 fine gold.

The design places the official Milano Cortina 2026 logo at the center, framed by a sunburst motif. Around the inner edge are the words Repubblica Italiana and Giochi Olimpici Invernali, underscoring the coin’s national and Olympic significance. On the reverse side, the focus shifts to the Olympic Flame, with a depiction of the torch relay logo accompanied by the inscription Viaggio della Fiamma Olimpica — “Journey of the Olympic Flame.”

The €20 gold piece is the most prominent offering in a broader 32-coin series released by the Italian Treasury to mark the Games. The collection ranges from smaller denominations, including a €6 coin dedicated to curling and speed skating, to a larger €50 gold coin, giving collectors and enthusiasts a wide array of options tied to Italy’s first Winter Olympics in two decades.
