A 43-year-old man from Nepal who was seeking asylum in Italy was found unconscious Saturday afternoon in the Porto Vecchio area of Trieste, where he had apparently taken shelter during days of extreme cold.
He was discovered by fellow nationals, who called emergency services. The man was taken to Cattinara Hospital and admitted to intensive care in critical condition after suffering cardiac arrest, doctors said.
According to aid groups, he had gone to police headquarters the previous day to begin the asylum application process but was unable to enter the offices.
The man remains hospitalized in intensive care.
