From the Alpine foothills to the Adriatic coast, hotels are filled through the holiday season — even on New Year’s Eve — as a steady stream of foreign travelers discovers a region once considered one of Italy’s best-kept secrets. In Trieste the evidence is everywhere: languages from across Europe and beyond echo through Piazza Unità d’Italia, cafés are buzzing, and museums are packed. Speaking with visitors in the city center, a common refrain emerges — they came out of curiosity, but are leaving with something closer to affection.
