Winter Hits Friuli Venezia Giulia: Yellow Alert from Monday

Winter has firmly arrived in Friuli Venezia Giulia. Temperatures have fallen below freezing, with morning frosts now common. Between Thursday, November 20, and Friday, November 21, up to 30 centimeters of snow fell in the high Alps and Prealps, with 5 to 10 centimeters in the valleys and snow visible down to 400 meters.

yellow weather alert is in effect across the region from 9 a.m. Monday, November 24, until 11:59 p.m. Tuesday, November 25. Heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected, particularly in Trieste, Gorizia, and the Basso Friuli area, where recent flooding in the Collio and Judrio basins could be worsened. Rainfall is likely to be heavy across the region, with the most intense downpours between Trieste and Gorizia, potentially accompanied by local thunderstorms.

According to Osmer forecasts, Monday will see moderate to heavy precipitation in the mountains, especially in the Julian Prealps, with snow initially around 500 meters, rising to 1,200–1,500 meters. Southwest winds will be strong at higher altitudes, with moderate Libeccio winds possible along the coast in the evening and overnight. Tuesday will begin cloudy, with heavy rainfall continuing in the eastern part of the region. By midday, some breaks are expected over the plains and coast, but scattered showers and thunderstorms may return in the late afternoon and evening, with snow levels dropping to around 800 meters. Bora winds will pick up along the coast in the evening, expected to persist at least until Thursday.
