Authorities in Trieste began operations on Wednesday to secure an explosive device discovered on Sept. 18 within the Miramare Marine Protected Area, a stretch of coastline known for its ecological sensitivity.

The Trieste Port Authority issued a temporary order banning all activity within a 500-meter radius of a designated point off the harbor anchorage. The restriction, officials said, is necessary to ensure safety while the device is removed.

Specialized divers and technicians from the Sdai unit in Ancona are overseeing the operation and are expected to continue their work on Thursday. During the procedure, all vessels must remain at least 500 meters from the Sdai craft as the ordnance is towed to a secure location for disposal.
