Trieste and its surrounding province are now accepting applications for a training program to become a volunteer animal protection officer with the International Organization for Animal Protection (OIPA).

The course will be introduced at an information session on Wednesday, October 15, at 7 p.m. Interested participants can request further details by contacting guardietrieste@oipa.org. Classes are free and are scheduled to begin on November 4. The program includes two intermediate tests and a final in-person exam. Applications will be accepted until October 27. Participation requires only membership in OIPA, with a voluntary contribution.

“Volunteer OIPA animal protection officers hold the status of public officials, administrative police officers, and, where applicable, judicial police officers,” said Massimo Pradella, national coordinator of OIPA eco-animal protection officers. “Their responsibilities include preventing and addressing violations related to animal welfare and safeguarding local livestock resources.”

The role of eco-animal protection officer is recognized under Italian law concerning animal oversight (laws no. 611/2013 and no. 189/2004) as well as other state and regional legislation on the protection of companion animals. Appointment as an OIPA sworn officer is granted by the Prefect via official decree.

The training program is open to adults who are highly motivated, responsible, and passionate about animal welfare, and who support the organization’s mission. Applicants must have at least a middle school education and no criminal convictions or pending legal cases.

For more information or to apply, interested candidates should email guardietrieste@oipa.org with their name, phone number, and email address.
