A local nonprofit dedicated to supporting the families of children undergoing surgery at the city’s pediatric hospital announced plans on Monday to expand its housing program, adding three new free accommodations near Burlo Garofolo Children’s Hospital.
The initiative, led by the Associazione Bambini Chirurgici (ABC), will provide renovated apartments on Via dell’Istria, offering families a place to stay close to their children during treatment. The homes are expected to open following the completion of ongoing renovations.
“The work that ABC carries out in welcoming and supporting families of young patients is commendable,” said Riccardo Riccardi, regional councillor for health and social policies, during a presentation at Palazzo Ralli. “It reminds us that healthcare should be seen as part of a broader concept of health—one that includes family, volunteers, and emotional support, with the hospital serving as just one, though essential, link in the chain.”
The program, known as Progetto Accoglienza, already provides about 200 families each year with safe, comfortable, and free housing during hospital stays. ABC leaders said the expansion was partly driven by growing demand, including from families affected by global conflicts.
“While we are making progress with these new homes, additional private contributions are necessary to meet the increasing needs,” said Giusy Battain, ABC’s director, alongside Maria Cristina Pedicchio, the organization’s president.
Several foundations and private donors already support ABC’s work, with the Beneficencia Stiftung Foundation among the most significant contributors.
A recent three-year study conducted in partnership with the University of Trieste found that 97.8 percent of families reported experiencing their child’s hospitalization with greater peace of mind thanks to ABC’s housing program, and 100 percent expressed complete satisfaction with the support they received.
