As Barcolana 57, presented by Generali, approaches the milestone of 600 registered boats, organizers in Trieste are expanding the program with the launch of registrations for a series of related regattas scheduled from October 1 to 11.
Among the most notable additions is the Para Sailing European Championship, which will be hosted in collaboration with the Società Triestina della Vela. The competition, sanctioned by World Sailing and the European Sailing Federation, will feature the Hansa 303 class — a widely used boat for sailors with disabilities. The championship begins on October 1 with an opening ceremony and concludes on October 5. More than 40 double crews are expected, with races staged in Trieste’s Porto Vecchio.
“The sporting structure of Barcolana’s two weeks is already well defined, allowing us to broaden and promote our program earlier than usual,” said Mitja Gialuz, president of the Società Velica di Barcola e Grignano, which organizes the regatta. “This year we have an exceptional lineup, with two European championships incorporated into Barcolana. We’ve worked particularly hard with Triestina della Vela to design the best Para Sailing event possible, giving visibility and sporting recognition to the European Hansa 303 championship.”
Marina Simoni, president of the Società Triestina della Vela, emphasized the event’s inclusive mission. “We believe that sport, even before sailing, is a powerful tool for real inclusion,” she said. “Hosting such a prestigious European championship under the auspices of World Sailing is both an honor and a responsibility.”
Alongside the Para Sailing championship, registrations are now open for the Barcolana Solaris Adriatic Cup (October 9–10), which brings together owners of yachts built by the Solaris shipyard in Aquileia. Races will be conducted under ORC handicap rules, with a base along Trieste’s waterfront.
The Barcolana Maxi Trofeo Portopiccolo, now in its ninth edition, is also accepting entries. Reserved for yachts measuring 16 meters and above, the “Maxi” features ORC racing and includes one race on Barcolana’s full course, serving as a preview of the main event.
Looking ahead, September 1 will mark the opening of registrations for the Barcolana TriEste24 European Championship, the first continental championship for the Este24 one-design class. Scheduled from October 9 to 11, the regatta will double as the final stop of the Italian Este24 circuit. The fleet will also take part in a stadium race on October 10 and in Barcolana itself.
