Despite a nationwide strike by major trade unions on Saturday, Trieste Airport remained fully operational, with no reported disruptions to flights between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m., the time window during which the strike was scheduled.
Passengers traveling through the airport expressed surprise and relief at the smooth experience. Many were en route to various destinations across Italy and Europe, including Bari, Apulia — a popular summer travel destination in the country’s south.
“I’m traveling to Bari to visit friends — it’s one of the stops on my European tour from Singapore,” said one traveler. “I’m on a boat, so I’ll be traveling around Italy with my friends.”
Another passenger said they were heading to Bari for a special family event. “It’s a celebration — the 60th birthday of my cousin. We’re having a cousins’ reunion.”
Others mentioned continuing their journeys to Greece and Sicily. “I’m going to meet a friend in Bari, and after that, I’m going to Greece,” said a tourist at the gate. “I’m going back to Sicily, actually,” another traveler added.
The national strike, called by several labor unions in protest of working conditions and wages in the transportation sector, affected airports and transit systems across the country. However, Trieste Airport reported full functionality, with staff and services operating as scheduled.
