A coastal cleanup initiative organized by the Lega Navale took place on Saturday morning in Trieste, drawing praise from regional officials as divers and volunteers joined forces to remove submerged waste from the seabed.

Speaking at the event, Fabio Scoccimarro, Regional Councillor for Environmental Protection, emphasized the importance of citizen-led efforts in preserving the marine environment. “Events like today’s help us monitor conditions and set a positive example by removing the small amount of waste still present underwater,” he said. “It’s important to stress that this debris is not due to a lack of civility among seafarers, but rather the result of weather events, such as the bora wind or other extreme conditions.”

The initiative, spearheaded by the Lega Navale, is part of a broader campaign to raise awareness of marine sustainability. Scoccimarro thanked the organizers and reiterated the Region’s commitment to supporting environmental education for all age groups—from young children to adults.

“We want this to become a shared mantra,” he said, “so that we can enjoy not only a more beautiful sea but also a Trieste with increasingly better water quality, which is already very good.”

The event underscored the growing role of local communities in environmental stewardship, particularly along Italy’s vulnerable coastlines, where pollution and climate-related challenges remain key concerns.
