The festive season is underway in Trieste, where the city’s annual Christmas Market has transformed the historic streets from Via delle Torri to Piazza della Borsa into a lively hub of activity. Organized by CAT Terziaria Venezia Giulia, the Technical Assistance Center for Businesses of Trieste’s Confcommercio, this year’s market features a diverse array of cultural and commercial offerings.
The market, which runs through January 6, includes around 70 wooden chalets offering a wide variety of goods. Nearly 30 of these chalets are dedicated to food, showcasing delicacies from various origins, while the remainder offer an array of gifts and artisanal items. Visitors can explore everything from handmade decorations to jewelry, providing ample opportunities for holiday shopping.
A Global Marketplace
This year’s market emphasizes Trieste’s position as a meeting point of cultures. While 25% of the vendors are local, the remaining 75% represent regions across Italy and 11 other countries, including Austria, Ecuador, Croatia, France, Lithuania, Serbia, Slovenia, Russia, Tunisia, Turkey, and Hungary. This international presence adds a global dimension to the event, with chances to sample cuisines and crafts from around the world.
Extended Hours for Holiday Shoppers
The chalets are open daily, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday and on Sundays. On Fridays, Saturdays, and holiday eves, hours are extended until 9 p.m., providing visitors with more time to enjoy the market.
Adding to the market’s appeal is the CrafTS exhibit in Piazza della Borsa. This space features creations by 20 young entrepreneurs, showcasing a range of items from fashion and accessories to cosmetics and home décor, highlighting the creativity within Trieste’s artistic community.
Festive Entertainment and Attractions
Beyond shopping, the market offers a range of entertainment options. Two carousels, located in Piazza del Ponterosso and Piazza della Borsa, and an ice-skating rink contribute to the festive atmosphere. Street performers and animators in Christmas costumes engage with visitors, offering sweets for children and creating opportunities for festive photos at a designated selfie station.
Social and Environmental Initiatives
This year’s market also highlights community and sustainability efforts. AcegasApsAmga, a local utility company, is using its chalet to promote waste sorting, with a particular focus on organic recycling. Additionally, two chalets have been made available to 42 non-profits and charities, giving them a platform to share their missions with attendees.
Cultural and Economic Highlights
The Amici del Presepio organization is displaying nativity scene collections, while the provincial Confcommercio and Trieste Convention Visitors Bureau (CVB) provide information on business opportunities and distribute tickets for the upcoming “Happy New Year Trieste 2025” show. Scheduled for January 6 at the Politeama Rossetti Theater, this event will conclude the holiday season.
A City in Celebration
Beyond the market, Trieste’s festive spirit extends to local businesses, which are encouraged to decorate their storefronts with Christmas trees and holiday-themed adornments. This initiative, combined with the market’s international and community-oriented focus, reflects Trieste’s ability to blend tradition with modernity.
