Amidst the historical ambiance of Trieste, the Magazzino delle Idee is hosting an evocative exhibition titled “Io non scendo. Storie di donne che salgono sugli alberi e guardano lontano” (“I Don’t Come Down. Stories of Women Who Climb Trees and Look Far”). Running through August 25th, the exhibition, curated by Laura Leonelli, celebrates the daring spirit of women from diverse backgrounds and eras who have ascended both metaphorically and literally.

Promoted by ERPAC FVG, the exhibition presents over 200 anonymous portraits of women perched in trees, spanning from the late 19th century to the 1970s. These photographs, sourced from various countries, capture women in moments of quiet rebellion and introspection. Interwoven with these anonymous faces are the voices of renowned women such as Louisa May Alcott, Simone de Beauvoir, and Astrid Lindgren, whose words echo the exhibition’s themes of defiance and self-realization.

Laura Leonelli, a journalist and avid collector of anonymous photographs, will lead a series of free guided tours throughout the summer. Her tours are scheduled for July 12th at 4 PM, July 13th and 14th at 11 AM and 4 PM, and will continue on August 23rd at 4 PM, August 24th at 11 AM and 4 PM, and August 25th at 11 AM and 4 PM. Reservations are required and can be made via email (info@magazzinodelleidee.it) or by phone (040 377 47 83).

Adding to the exhibition’s acclaim, its accompanying catalog, “Io non scendo,” has garnered international recognition. Published by Postcart editions, the catalog is a compact collection of about 100 anonymous photographs, complemented by Leonelli’s essays on notable women who have metaphorically climbed the trees of awareness and self-fulfillment. This unique blend of imagery and prose has earned the catalog a place as the sole Italian finalist in the prestigious Les Prix du Livre at the Rencontres de la Photographie in Arles, under the LE PRIX PHOTO-TEXTE category. This category honors books where photographs and text contribute equally to the narrative.

The exhibition and its catalog underscore the enduring legacy of women who have dared to rise above societal expectations. For further details, visit www.magazzinodelleidee.it.
