Trieste is set to come alive with a vibrant array of performances this week as part of the annual Trieste Estate festival, a grand summer celebration featuring 300 performances across 40 locations. Organized by the Municipality of Trieste, this year’s festival promises an eclectic mix of operetta, drama, and comedy from June 17 to 23.

The festivities will commence on Monday, June 17, with the Approdi festival, presenting “Marilyn – Her Words,” a dramatic exploration of Marilyn Monroe’s life, portrayed through the lens of a psychoanalytic session. This performance, scheduled for 9:15 PM in the garden of the Sartorio Museum, offers a poignant blend of glamour and melancholy, setting the tone for a week of diverse artistic expressions.

On Tuesday, June 18, the spotlight shifts to the Rossetti Theatre for the Festil – Summer Festival of the Coastline. This cross-border theatrical project, involving artists from Slovenia, Croatia, and Italy, will present “Black Stones” at 9 PM. The performance delves into the multifaceted concept of home, stripping it down to its core elements. Concurrently, at 9:15 PM, Approdi will return to the Sartorio Museum with “The Metamorphosis Remixed,” a reimagining of Kafka’s classic with an innovative fusion of visual, auditory, and musical elements.

Midweek entertainment continues with the “Stand-up Contest Night” on Wednesday, June 19, also part of the Approdi festival. This event, starting at 9:15 PM at the Sartorio Museum, features a competition among young comedians under 36 from various Italian cities, promising an evening of fresh and dynamic humor.

The prestigious Operetta Festival begins on Thursday, June 20, at the Rossetti Theatre with “L’Acqua Cheta,” an operetta by Giusette Pietri based on Augusto Novelli’s comedy. Directed and performed by Andrea Binetti, the show will have repeat performances on June 21. Meanwhile, the Let’s Play festival will continue with “Trieste è il Mare – Trst Je Morje,” a production celebrating Trieste’s maritime heritage, featuring performances by Ariella Reggio, Alessandro Mizzi, and Ilija Ota.

Friday, June 21, will feature a comedic exploration of Istria in “From Istria with… Love! Cabaret!” at 9 PM in the Sartorio Museum. This co-production by La Contrada and the Italian Drama of Fiume Ivan de Zajc stars Zita Fusco and Mirco Soldano and will also be performed on Saturday, June 22.

Saturday’s highlights include the presentation of the jury for the 15th International Mattador Screenwriting Award at 11:30 AM at the Press Club. The panel will feature acclaimed writer and screenwriter Maurizio Braucci, director Laura Samani, and producer Francesco Bonsembiante. The day will also see the Fuoricentro festival at the Quarantotti Gambini Library in San Giacomo, starting at 7 PM, with performances by the Viktor Parma Band, the Breg Wind Orchestra, and the Ongia Band.

The week culminates on Sunday, June 23, with a tribute to the centenary of renowned Triestine authors Carpinteri and Faraguna. “Putele… e Putei – Carpinteri e Faraguna 100,” held at the Sartorio Museum at 9 PM, aims to bridge generational gaps by introducing the youth to Trieste’s rich cultural heritage, featuring a performance by the esteemed Ariella Reggio.

Trieste Estate, a showcase of the city’s cultural vibrancy, is supported by PromoTurismoFVG and the Trieste Convention & Visitors Bureau, with artistic direction by Gabriele Centis for music and Lino Marrazzo for prose theater. The festival continues to be a beacon of artistic excellence and community spirit, drawing audiences from near and far to celebrate the arts in the heart of Trieste.
