Battered Shores And Broken Dreams: Trieste’s Road To Recovery After Devastating Storm

A little over a month after the brutal storm, the Trieste shoreline is still reeling. Signs scream “No Entry,” barricades block the way, and terraces lie in ruins.

More than 30 days have passed since the November 3rd tempest swept through from Sistiana to Muggia, chomping down on half of the Gulf of Trieste’s coastline, yet the recovery seems sluggish.

Despite bulldozers seemingly parked due to relentless rain, the city insists they’ve been grinding away, already shelling out $200,000 for initial damage control.

Picture this: a chic establishment near Miramare, revamped by a group of young leaseholders just five years ago, now lies in shambles, swallowed by ferocious waves that devoured everything – from sun-beds to tables and chairs. The once bustling kitchen is now a memory. The damage? A whopping $450,000.

“We’re leaseholders – we can’t front the cash. We’re waiting on an emergency declaration,” they lament. Deputy Riccardi assures the request is in, and all eyes are on Rome for answers.

A double-barreled survey, one from the Region, the other from the City, aims to reshape the Barcola waterfront. The Dipiazza administration throws their survey into the ring at a press conference, where even Environment Minister Scoccimarro from Fedriga’s office makes a cameo.

Want your say? You can chime in via your smartphone or good old-fashioned paper until December 22, as the URPs mobile unit canvasses neighborhoods, coaxing opinions from the populace.

This survey guarantees anonymity but not redundancy, as clarified in the presser – a stark contrast to the Region’s questionnaire, which, for now at least, can be stacked with votes from the same user.

Tick-tock on the clock: the Region’s survey expired on December 10, the City’s will expire on January 7. Both administrations pledge to fuse insights and data.

Curious about public sentiment, we hit the urban beach to gauge residents’ take on the impending changes.
