Four hospitals in Friuli Venezia Giulia have been recognized in Newsweek’s World’s Best Specialized Hospitals 2027 ranking, placing the region among the country’s leading centers for pediatric care, oncology, cardiology and neurological medicine.
The annual list, compiled by the American magazine in partnership with data platform Statista, evaluates hospitals in 35 countries across 13 medical specialties. The rankings are based primarily on a survey of more than 42,000 physicians conducted between May and June, alongside hospital accreditation scores and patient-reported outcome measures.
Friuli Venezia Giulia’s recognized hospitals
The region’s hospitals were honored in four specialized fields:
- IRCCS Burlo Garofolo in Trieste for Pediatrics
- Ospedale di Cattinara in Trieste for Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery
- Santa Maria della Misericordia in Udine for Urology, Gastroenterology and Neurology
The recognition reflects the region’s long-standing role in highly specialized healthcare, with institutions that serve patients from across Italy and neighboring Central European countries.
Italy’s leading hospitals
Nationally, Rome’s Bambino Gesù Children’s Hospital climbed to fourth place worldwide in pediatrics, becoming Europe’s highest-ranked children’s hospital and the only Italian pediatric institution in the global top 25. It also received additional recognition for excellence in oncology and neonatology.
Policlinico Gemelli in Rome was the only Italian hospital to appear in all 13 specialties evaluated. It ranked first in Italy for gastroenterology, endocrinology, pulmonology, and obstetrics and gynecology, the latter earning third place globally. Milan’s Carlo Besta Neurological Institute ranked eighth worldwide for neurology, while Bologna’s Rizzoli Orthopaedic Institute placed ninth globally in orthopedics.
In total, 42 Italian hospitals were included in the 2027 ranking. Lombardy accounted for the largest share with 15 institutions, followed by Lazio with seven and Piedmont with five, underscoring Italy’s strong presence in specialized medical care.
