Barcolana, the world’s largest sailing regatta by number of participants, will return for its 58th edition from Oct. 2 to 11, expanding beyond Trieste with more than 500 events staged across Friuli Venezia Giulia.

Organizers introduced the 2026 edition under the theme “Be Barcolana,” presenting it as an invitation for residents and visitors to take part in the city’s maritime tradition through sport, culture and community events. The annual festival will culminate with the Coppa d’Autunno on Sunday, Oct. 11, when hundreds of sailboats will compete in the Gulf of Trieste.

This year’s program stretches well beyond the waterfront. Events are scheduled in Aquileia, Grado, Lignano, the Lake of the Three Municipalities and Trieste, reflecting a regional approach that organizers say aims to strengthen ties between the regatta and local communities.

Among the highlights is the arrival of the Italian Navy’s training ship Amerigo Vespucci, which is expected to dock in Trieste from Oct. 8 until race day. The city will also host the final stage of the Marina Militare Nastro Rosa Tour, Italy’s national offshore sailing circuit.

The festival village will grow into the Borgo Teresiano neighborhood for the first time, adding concerts, food events, workshops and public gatherings alongside the traditional venues in Piazza Unità d’Italia and the waterfront. More than 40 musical performances are planned over the 10-day festival, including floating concerts along the Canal Grande.

Sporting events will include competitions in sailing, rowing, swimming, stand-up paddle boarding, water polo and kayaking. Olympic swimmer Gregorio Paltrinieri is scheduled to participate in the Barcolana open-water nautical mile, while the Women in Sailing regatta will return with mixed crews competing for a trophy recognizing female leadership in sailing.

Organizers also announced the debut of the Barcolana AI Sea Summit, a conference dedicated to the use of artificial intelligence in marine ecosystems and the blue economy, alongside the literary festival Un Mare di Racconti.

As of the presentation on Sept. 17, more than 800 boats had already registered for the regatta. Last year’s edition attracted 1,865 entries, underscoring the event’s international appeal.
