A potentially fatal accident was averted in central Trieste on Sunday after military personnel from Italy’s Military Academy rescued a driver whose car plunged into the sea near Piazza Unità d’Italia.
The incident occurred at around 12:15 p.m. as a group of academy cadets had just disembarked from buses for an official visit to the city. Moments later, a car carrying a single occupant unexpectedly entered the water at the nearby pier.
Witnessing the incident, several members of the Military Academy immediately dove into the sea, reached the submerged vehicle and pulled the driver to safety. Emergency medical personnel from Italy’s 118 ambulance service treated the man at the scene before taking over his care.
Authorities have not released information about the driver’s condition.
The Carabinieri are investigating the circumstances that caused the vehicle to leave the roadway and enter the water.
The swift response by the academy personnel was widely credited with preventing what could have become a fatal accident, highlighting the readiness of the soldiers, who acted decisively despite being in Trieste for ceremonial duties rather than active service.
