The city of Trieste has opened a new municipal child care center, Marinella, on the site of a former traffic police barracks in the Roiano neighborhood, completing a major redevelopment project that transformed an 8,000-square-meter area into a community space for families.

The center, which will welcome 66 children aged 3 to 36 months beginning in September, features classrooms, an on-site kitchen and a 600-square-meter garden designed for outdoor activities. It will begin hosting summer programs later this month.

City officials said the more than €5 million project is part of a broader effort to modernize Trieste’s educational infrastructure. The energy-efficient building includes solar panels, heat pumps and a green roof.

The facility is named after Marinella Filippaz, an Istrian refugee who died as a child in 1956 after her family arrived in Trieste during the postwar exodus from Istria. A dedication ceremony attended by members of her family was held during the inauguration.

The opening marks the final stage of a redevelopment initiative that has already delivered public green spaces, a playground and parking facilities to the neighborhood.
