Artificial intelligence is reshaping economic and social systems, but policymakers must strike a balance between regulation and innovation, the governor of the Friuli Venezia Giulia region, Massimiliano Fedriga, said Friday at AImpact, a conference on artificial intelligence, digital marketing and innovation held in Trieste.

Speaking at the close of the event, Fedriga said artificial intelligence is a transformative force that cannot be stopped, though governments have a responsibility to establish rules that do not hinder growth. He noted that the region is investing significant resources in innovation, acknowledging that experimentation can also lead to failure.

Fedriga contrasted Europe’s approach to innovation with that of the United States, where large investment funds back startups with substantial capital and where business failure is often viewed as a normal part of the entrepreneurial process rather than a social stigma.

While the long-term impact of artificial intelligence remains uncertain, Fedriga warned of the risk that wealth and power could become concentrated among a small group of actors capable of controlling technological development.

This year’s AImpact conference focused on how artificial intelligence is changing labor market demands and creating new opportunities for students and professionals.
