The city of Trieste will commemorate Italy’s Republic Day on Tuesday, June 2, with a series of public ceremonies organized by the Prefecture in collaboration with the municipal administration.
The celebrations, which this year coincide with the 80th anniversary of the founding of the Italian Republic, will begin at 10 a.m. in Piazza Unità with the traditional flag-raising ceremony attended by local authorities, including Mayor Roberto Dipiazza.
At the same time, a parallel national ceremony will take place at the Redipuglia Military Memorial, one of Italy’s largest World War I memorial sites. The banner of the City of Trieste will be represented there by Maurizio De Blasio, the city councilor for education and family affairs.
Events will resume in the afternoon in Piazza Unità, where the lowering of the flag ceremony is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. The message from President Sergio Mattarella will then be read publicly.
The day’s celebrations will conclude in nearby Piazza Verdi with an evening concert open to residents and visitors. Beginning at 8:30 p.m., musicians from the Giuseppe Tartini Conservatory of Music will perform live before a public screening of the official Republic Day concert organized by the Presidency of the Republic.
Republic Day, celebrated annually on June 2, marks the 1946 referendum in which Italians voted to abolish the monarchy and establish the republic.
