As Italy’s Republic Day holiday weekend approaches, the seaside town of Grado is preparing for an influx of visitors with a program that highlights its culinary traditions, cultural offerings and distinctive lagoon landscape.
The centerpiece of the celebrations is the second edition of Friuli Doc Spring Edition, running from May 29 to June 2. The festival brings regional food producers to the historic center, offering specialties from across Friuli Venezia Giulia, from mountain cheeses and traditional frico to local meats and craft beers.
Cultural events include two programs connected to the history festival èStoria, among them a discussion on the final years of World War II in the region and a family-friendly excursion linking Grado to nearby Aquileia, home to some of Italy’s most significant archaeological treasures.
Visitors can also explore the area’s natural attractions through boat excursions in the lagoon, trips to the island sanctuary of Barbana and seasonal maritime connections to Aquileia and Lignano. A full-moon boat tour, known as Tintarella di Luna, offers an evening experience on the water under the light of the moon.
Outdoor enthusiasts will find opportunities for stand-up paddleboarding and kitesurfing, activities for which Grado’s shallow waters and steady winds have made it an increasingly popular destination.
