The comments by U.S. President Donald Trump regarding Pope Leo XIV have prompted a broad political and public reaction in Italy, where leaders across the spectrum responded with concern and criticism.

The controversy began after Trump posted messages on social media on Sunday night in which he described Pope Leo XIV as “weak” and “terrible,” and suggested he had played a role in the pope’s election. The remarks came amid heightened international tensions linked to the U.S.-led approach toward Iran.

Trump later reiterated his criticism in brief comments to reporters, saying he was “not a big fan” of the pontiff. He subsequently shared an AI-generated image depicting himself in a religious context, which further intensified debate online and drew reactions from religious groups and public figures in several countries.

In Italy, a predominantly Catholic country where Vatican City is located, the reaction was particularly strong. Pope Leo XIV, the first American-born pontiff, also responded indirectly in remarks to reporters, saying he was not intimidated by external political pressure and would continue to advocate for peace and the message of the Gospel.

Political reaction in Italy

Italian political leaders responded across party lines, including members of the governing coalition, which has generally maintained close relations with Washington.

Deputy prime minister and League party leader Matteo Salvini said that Pope Leo has been actively engaged in promoting peace and that criticism directed at the pontiff risked undermining his role as a spiritual figure. He added that attacking the pope did not appear constructive, given his position as a global religious leader.

Prime minister Giorgia Meloni has not issued a direct comment on Trump’s remarks. However, she expressed well wishes to the pope ahead of his upcoming overseas trip and emphasized hopes that his mission could contribute to dialogue and peace, as well as support for Christian communities abroad.

President Sergio Mattarella also focused on themes of peace and unity in a message marking the pontiff’s departure, highlighting the importance of calls for reconciliation in a period of international instability.

Foreign minister and deputy prime minister Antonio Tajani said he held the pope in high regard and described him as a determined figure who has consistently spoken about faith and peace since his election.

In Rome, mayor Roberto Gualtieri expressed solidarity with Pope Leo XIV, saying the city stood with the pontiff and characterizing the tone of the U.S. president’s comments as unacceptable.

Opposition response

Opposition parties were more direct in their criticism. Elly Schlein, leader of the Democratic Party, expressed solidarity with the pope and said the remarks reflected a level of political aggression she described as unacceptable.

Former prime minister Matteo Renzi said that defending the pontiff was important beyond religious lines and described the exchange as unusually confrontational in modern relations between political leaders and the Vatican.

Angelo Bonelli of the Green and Left Alliance criticized both Trump’s comments and the Italian government’s response, arguing that stronger condemnation was warranted. He also raised concerns about what he described as escalating rhetoric surrounding religious imagery in political communication.

Broader context

The exchange highlights ongoing sensitivities in Italy regarding the role of the papacy in international affairs and the country’s close cultural and political ties to the Vatican. While Italian leaders differed in tone, most statements emphasized the importance of peace, institutional respect, and dialogue.

At present, neither the Vatican nor the U.S. administration has indicated further official comment beyond the initial exchanges.
