Starting August 3, 2026, paper identity cards will no longer be valid in Trieste. Residents are advised to obtain the new electronic identity cards at the city’s civic centers.
Access to civic centers will be available on a first-come, first-served basis at service counters, with no prior appointment required. Extended hours have been scheduled for March at the Centro Civico on Via del Teatro Romano from 2 to 5 p.m. on the following dates: Thursday, March 5; Friday, March 6; Tuesday, March 10; Thursday, March 12; Friday, March 13; Tuesday, March 17; Thursday, March 19; and Friday, March 20. These additional openings supplement regular hours, which can be consulted online along with addresses for other civic centers and further details.
If all applicants cannot be served on a given day, staff will schedule follow-up appointments.
Applicants should bring a passport-style photo and their current identity card, or, in cases of loss or theft, a relevant police report. The cost for the electronic card is €22, payable at the counter by card (preferred) or cash.
For minors, both parents must provide consent for the card to be valid for travel abroad.
