As the 76th edition of the iconic Sanremo Music Festival reaches its final day, the town of Sanremo has been bustling with anticipation. Fans and participants alike are gathering in the Ligurian city, known as the “City of Flowers,” as the festival prepares to close another year of Italy’s most celebrated music event.

For visitors from Friuli Venezia Giulia, the interest extends beyond the music itself, focusing on how the northeastern region is represented on this national stage. This year, the region has a visible presence in both music and culture.

Several artists from Friuli Venezia Giulia are taking part in the festival: Enrico Brun, a musician and producer from San Vito al Tagliamento as well Valter Sivilotti, originally from Udine, who will be conducting on tonight’s stage.

The region is also represented through its culinary and wine traditions, featured prominently in one of the festival’s showcases, highlighting Friuli Venezia Giulia’s contributions to Italy’s rich gastronomic landscape.

We wandered downtown Sanremo to understand – why does the festival matter to much to Italians?
