Every February, deep in the mountains of Val Resia in Friuli Venezia Giulia, an ancient ritual breaks winter’s silence. In the village of San Giorgio, the Püst — the Resia Carnival — turns the main square into a swirl of music and motion. Dancers in flowing white dresses and handmade flowered hats move in solemn steps to the hypnotic strains of the local violins. This year, as the 2026 Winter Olympics unfold in Cortina d’Ampezzo, the Ash Wednesday puppet will be dressed in Olympic gear — tradition playfully saluting the global stage beyond the valley.
