As Trieste prepares for the 2026 Carnival celebrations, city officials have introduced temporary restrictions on alcohol consumption and the use of glass containers in the area surrounding the city’s main railway station.
In recent days, the mayor signed an urgent ordinance establishing specific rules governing the possession and consumption of beverages in and around Piazza Libertà, the square in front of Trieste Centrale railway station. The measure will be in effect from Thursday, Feb. 12, through Tuesday, Feb. 17, coinciding with peak Carnival festivities in the nearby coastal town of Muggia.
The ordinance applies daily from 6 p.m. to 1 a.m. the following morning and covers the area between Piazza Libertà and Largo Città di Santos. During those hours, it will be prohibited to possess or consume beverages of any kind in glass bottles or aluminum cans. The ban also extends to alcoholic drinks of any strength, regardless of the type of container.
City officials described the measure as a targeted intervention aimed at ensuring public safety during a period when the area experiences increased foot traffic, particularly from people boarding buses to attend Carnival events in Muggia. In previous years, episodes of disorderly conduct and disturbances were reported on buses and at bus stops, often linked to alcohol consumption by passengers traveling to the festivities.
The temporary restrictions are intended to prevent similar incidents and to reduce noise, disruptive behavior and safety risks in a part of the city that serves as a key transportation hub during the celebrations.
