Interview: FVG governor, Massimiliano Fedriga

As Venice clamps down on day-trippers, its neighbor to the northeast, Trieste, has been cast as a potential next stop for the crowds. But officials in Friuli Venezia Giulia insist the fears are overstated.

Governor Massimiliano Fedriga said that over-tourism has not arrived in the region, where visitor numbers remain a fraction of Italy’s major hubs. Instead, the focus is on drawing travelers into overlooked corners: medieval villages tucked into hills, wine country stretching toward Slovenia, and quiet Alpine valleys.

On the streets of Trieste, locals expressed mixed views, though most welcomed the attention as a long-awaited opportunity.
